About us

Surviving STEM is an initiative dedicated to empowering PhD students and postdocs in STEM fields to thrive both academically and personally. Our mission is to address the pressing mental health challenges faced by scholars in academia through accessible, evidence-based support tailored to the unique pressures of STEM. As a team of individuals with firsthand experience navigating the highs and lows of academic life, we understand the demanding workloads, competition, and personal sacrifices that often define the STEM journey. We’re here to change that narrative—helping scholars overcome barriers, find balance, and unlock their full potential in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Our Mission

At Surviving STEM, we aim to:

  • Foster resilience, diversity, and integrity in STEM fields
  • Provide accessible mental health and professional development resources.
  • Create an inclusive community where every scholar feels supported and empowered to succeed.

Why We Exist

  • STEM academia can be isolating, competitive, and emotionally draining. Studies show that nearly 40% of graduate students report symptoms of anxiety and depression, and yet, many hesitate to seek help due to stigma or lack of tailored support.
  • We’re here to address this gap. By offering personalized services like mental health counseling, career coaching, academic support, and peer networks, we help scholars not only survive but thrive in academia.

 Our Vision

We envision a future where thriving in STEM is the norm—not the exception. Through consistent, reliable support, we aim to foster innovation, diversity, and well-being in STEM fields worldwide.

Our Story

Founded by STEM professionals who experienced the struggles of academia firsthand, Surviving STEM began as a passion project to make a difference. What started as a grassroots effort to connect and support peers is now growing into a comprehensive platform to offer scalable solutions for mental health and professional development.

By staying true to our roots and listening to the needs of the community, we remain committed to making academia a healthier, more inclusive space for all.
